Surly Tab Holiday Catalog 2010

Catalogs have gotten downright boring over the last few years.  Gone are the timpani-playing salt-hunters of yesteryear, and for that matter anything which distinguishes SLT from W-S or Cook's.  I often have to recheck the cover to remember which catalog I'm reading.

This week it's the Sur le Table holiday special catalog.  Bring on the roasting pans!  Click "more" for the snark.

Don't miss Free Restaurant Day today

  

As every year on this date, the over 1000 restaurants in the Golden Gate Restaurant Association are serving free lunch and dinner to all comers throughout the cities of San Francisco, Berkeley and Alameda.  I'm leaving work at 4pm to see how much I can stuff myself before the crowds get too big.  See you in the Mission!

The Great Aluminum Fairy Tale

Once upon a time, a group of enterprising manufacturers introduced a new type of pan to the United States. These pans were lighter, cheaper, and conducted heat more evenly. They were perfect for a new generation of small families which were having to learn to cook without servants or large groups of relatives. These pans were made of a new metal called "Aluminum".

Oh, those wacky catalog people!

Year in, year out, the catalogs come. The maniacally cheerful marketeers at Williams-Sonoma (W-S), Sur Le Table (SLT), Chef's Catalog and others do their best to get us to run up our credit card balances for frivolous and often non-functional kitchen gadgets. Or, as Becky once summed it up:

"Useless kitchen gadget 101. We don't know why you'd buy this, but we think enough suckers will find the picture irresistable that we're pricing it at at easy $200.00. Just for you."
