Where to Eat on the Upper Haight

The Upper Haight, or "Haight-Ashbury" to you tourists, is the portion of Haight Street between Divisadero and Stanyan in San Francisco.  It lies West, uphill, and slightly upmarket, from the other half of Haight Street, which is known as the "Lower Haight".  It is also where I live, so I'm going to give you a rundown on where's good to eat here.  Aside from my apartment, of course!

Because of the tourists, there are a startling number of eateries here.  There's also a lot of bars, so I'm going to do my "Where to Drink on the Lower Haight" sometime later.  There are a couple of combination places on this list and they are listed below only for their food. Other than that, the list below should be comprehensive.

French Rolled Omelets are easy!

In a recent print article, Cooks Illustrated Magazine attempted to convince us that French rolled omelets, a staple of rustic peasant cuisine in France for centuries, were somehow very difficult food worthy of a two-column recipe and the addition of a whole cup of saturated fat and a lot of fiddly handling (to be fair to them, Julia Child did this as well).

So, the other morning, I set out to prove them wrong.  I made rolled omelets not only quickly and easily (35 min for 4 omletes, start to finish), but I used inferior ingredients and didn't measure.  Among other things, instead of fresh whole room-temperature eggs, I used Costco carton fake eggs which were past their expiration date.

The result?  Quick, easy, tender, tasty.  This is easy food.  Recipe follows.

Eating & Travelling 101

Last week, taking advantage of my unemployment and my sweetie's freelance status, we drove up the US 101 from San Francisco to the Humboldt County Fair in Ferndale, CA. This being us, of course, most of the trip focused on food.

Beautiful Brazillian Food

I just got back from my annual trip to Brazil, and was reminded how little most North Americans know about the food there.

First of all, it's delicious. Especially the fruit.

Second, there are as many regional cuisines in Brazil as there are in the US, and they're just as distinct. If you've been to a Brazilian restaurant, that means that you've sampled only one of the types of food Brazil has to offer. I've had the pleasure of sampling many more of them. Let's start with breakfast.
