We were completely unaware of this little 3-year-old Sunset gem until our friend Tazz led us to it. Underdog! Although the only underdoggish thing about them is their modesty; this is unquestionably the best California-style hot dog stand I've ever encountered.
What do I mean by California-style? Well, most of their meat sausages are hand-made by the owners. They also serve a variety of vegetarian and even vegan sausages, many of which are made there. These come in a bewildering variety of flavors: knockwurst, linguica, chicken-apple-sage, vegetarian chipotle-mushroom, vegan garlic-artichoke. This is not your Chicago hot dog.
The ones they make are also available for purchase in 4-packs.
I've always regarded hot dogs as one of the few meat items which vegetarianizes well; once you've covered it in hot mustard and onions, who can tell what's in it?

Even some of their condiments are made by them, and all are organic. This picture has several organic mustards, organic catchup, their homemade hot sauce, their homeade saurkraut and pickles, and diced organic onions.

Above is a veggie hot dog (hot chipotle) covered in saurkraut, horseradish mustard, and onions on a whole-wheat bun. It's accompanied by Underdog's own organic tater tots.
They also have interesting deli salads. Seating is somewhat limited and only really good on a sunny day, since 2 of the 4 tables are outside. But ... on a summer afternoon, this is a great place for a lunch after trudging through the DeYoung or CalAcademy.
The only thing they could really do better is to have artisan buns available. I'd pay extra for that. Also, they don't have chili dogs.
