Like a county clerk, I have a birth and a death to announce today.
The birth is the Cookaholics Bulletin Board, which is awake and ready for registration now.
The death is the CooksIllustrated Bulletin Board. While it is not officially deceased yet, the doctor has given it a terminal prognosis and the family is buying a casket and calling the family lawyer, caterers and florists. The CI bulletin board was a great place for us compulsive cooks to meet, chat, and form a community from 2004 to 2007. There were even in-person gatherings ...
However, starting last year Boston Common Press, in a fit of ignorance and hysteria, started to destroy their web sites. The bulletin board is only one small casualty of BCP's general mismanagement; cooksillustrated.com and CooksIllustrated magazine, I predict, will soon follow it off the edge of oblivion.
I know I've dropped my subscription. The quality of the magazine has been steadily declining for the last 2 years. At this point, I get far more value out of Saveur, which is also less expensive.
Why? Swelled head, mostly. Christopher Kimball has become so enamored of his TV stardom on America's Test Kitchen and his own infallability that he is now neglecting everything at BCP except the show. And since BCP is and has always been a dictatorship, what Mr. Kimball neglects, fails.
RIP, CooksIllustrated, 1984 - 2009. We will miss you as you were in your heyday.
So, I have set up the new bulletin board to house our wayward community. All refugees from CooksIllustrated.com, as well as any chef, home cook, baker or gourmet are invited to join our community. The bulletin board will be community-governed and is running on modern, functional technology. Join us! Be one of us!
