For reasons I've never been able to figure out, San Francisco lacks many good Greek restaurants. You'd think with more than 20,000 Greeks in the Bay Area, we'd have a selection of them, but no. So whenever we go East we like to eat Greek.
Snack was recommended by our guidebook and Yelp, so we headed down to SOHO and checked it out. We found it a little family-run hole in the wall, which was a good sign. The two women in this picture were our servers; we're pretty sure that they're sisters. That photo shows you the width of the place; the other wall is just out of frame on the left side. I think the whole restaurant seated 16, but they did a brisk takeout business as well.

The menu, which was affordable and contained both the usual Greek standards and several more traditional items, was a better sign. So we sat down.
 | In order to get the best of the menu, we ordered a selection of meze,
except that Kris couldn't pass up the pastitiso. But we had lots of
other delicious finger food, including skordalia, tiropita,
spanakopita, octopus salad, sardine and cucumber bundles, baked feta
and peppers, and of course saganaki. The pita was great too. Sadly,
my camera was frozen in the 10F weather outside, and didn't thaw to
take pictures until we'd polished everything off, some of us with great
enthusiasm. |
After that, though, we were too full for dessert.
