Zabar's is the original gourmet market of New York, and is credited with inspiring Dean & Deluca, The Silver Palate and many of NY's pioneering gourmet markets of the 60's.
Unlike the others, Zabar's hasn't changed much in character, just expanded. Zabar's original barrels of olives are still there, as is the coffee roastery, but there's also oils, condiments, meats, a huge selection of cheese, seafood, a bakery (which does their own rye bread) and more.
On weekends, Zabar's employees offer samples of jam, salmon spread, coffee, chocolate, cheese and other tasty bites. Dave found another bottle of mustard here to his liking.
As if this weren't enough, up the cramped staircase is a kitchenware store, with shelves filled to spill over with cookware, bakeware, and coffee paraphenalia. Zabar's: why would you need to shop anywhere else?
