Foodie Quiz #2 -- Answers!

So, here's the answers to this week's foodie quiz.  See how you did.  How many did you get before turning to Google or Wikipedia?

  • All 8 Questions: sure you didn't use Wikipedia.
  • 5 or more: you are a true foodie trivia monster.  Go out and trounce your friends at Foodie Fight.
  • 3 or 4: You know a fair amount about food.  How well do you cook?
  • 1 or 2: Nice try.  I recommend buying yourself a copy of Alan Davidson and trying the next quiz.
  • None: why are you reading this blog?

1) c. The modern American market strawberry is a hybrid of the North American and South American strawberries.  Unlike most fruit, the strawberry genus is indigenous to four continents.

2) b. All of these cheeses are made with the thin, "tired" winter cow's milk.

3) a. Ethiopia seems the most likely original home of coffee; certainly the country has a coffee culture going back to at least the 10th century.  Other possibly locations include Kenya and various parts of the Arabian peninsula.

4) True.  The egg yolk emulsifies the oil.  The lemon juice is essentially flavoring.  Try it.

5) d. As an extra hint, "factice" means "artificial" in French.

6) b. despite its very common consumption in Arabia (and becoming a traditional food of Ramadan) for some reason carob is not mentioned in the Koran.  Apples, native to Northern Europe, are not mentioned in any of the three sources, whereas grapes and olives are mentioned in all three.

7) a. per Antonin Careme.

8) c. Tamari soy sauce contains no wheat, and thus is safe for celiac sufferers.
