Another week, another firing

Just unloaded another Cone 6 Glaze firing at Yosemite Place.  This firing had a number of notable successes, probably because I remembered to make a Kiln God this time.  Above is the best: it's an ash glaze I call Creeper Ash, with 1% cobalt carbonate, over Bronze Dragon Matte.  The latter glaze is a change of colorant from Green Dragon Matte from an old Ceramic Arts Daily article.    I couldn't get Frasca Ash from that article to work at all with the madrone wood ash I'm using, but the Green Dragon Matte worked beautifully just by swapping Tin Oxide for the Titanium Dioxide.

This bowl owes its success largely to the excellent glaze book Mastering Cone 6 Glazes (MC6G).  It's done with Raspberry (Rose from the book) over Varig (Varigated Glossy Blue from MC6G), both applied thick.  Because the glaze is so thick, there's some pinholing, but the peacock effect is worth it, no?

This cute guy is a "snoot", a maple syrup pitcher I designed based on lots of experience with real maple syrup.   My wife wanted one with eyes and feet, so here it is.

This is a more elegant "snoot".  On the outside is Oatmeal from MC6G, with Royal Blue over it.  I hadn't expected much of that glaze, and yet it's turned out to be one of the best from the book.

Bringing this back to food ... I also made a jar for my sourdough starter, "H.P." (don't ask).  That's Varig over Rutile Yellow (glossy base #2 from MCG6 with 8% Rutile).  The Varig ran about an inch.

Finally, I've been experimenting with making chocolate pots for French-style hot chocolate.  This is my first finished attempt; I think it came out pretty well.  It's done in Royal Blue, which is Glossy Base #2 from MC6G with 2% cobalt.

As usual, there are more/bigger pictures on my picture page.  Better, you can see most of these pieces in person by coming to my Open Studio weekend.

Wow! Nice job. Can you email your clay... firing temp, ( actual cone 6 , or 6 1/2. or even higher?/ have you tried on a white stoneware or even porcelain? Keep testing and trying. Mitch Levison Fired Up Studio

Mitch, The clay body is white stoneware ... Laguna B-Mix Cone 5. I wouldn't try porcelain due to the low firing temperature. The kiln was fully Cone 6 at the top, but the bottom shelf underfired slightly ... only Cone 5, really. I'm going to have to refire a few pieces from the bottom shelf.
